Toxic toothpaste

We all use toothpaste twice, hopefully three times a day, for healthy and beautiful teeth. The problem is that most commercial brands of toothpaste include in average 5 to 10 toxic chemicals which slowly harm your teeth and intoxicate your body: fluoride is an endocrine disruptor which causes cancer and disrupts your immune system. Triclosan is toxic and harmful, and affects your hormonal balance and your thyroid. It also strengthens your resistance to antibiotics and is very harmful for aquatic ecosystems. And the list goes on: sodium sulphate lauryl, Propylen glycol, aspartame, DEA, sorbitol, etc.

Therefore, choose an organic toothpaste, but beware, read the ingredients as some brands still include some of these chemicals. Making your own is also an option, and probably the best. There are several recipes out there, but here are my two favourites.

  1. Baking Soda Toothpaste
  •  4 tablespoons of coconut oil
  •  2 tablespoons of baking soda
  •  20 drops of peppermint essential oil
  • 1 glass jar with lid

What to do:

  •  Mix all ingredients and pour in a glass jar.
  •  grab a dab of baking soda toothpaste with your toothbrush and brush your teeth as usual.

      2. Turmeric Toothpaste:

What you’ll need:

  • 4 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 2 teaspoons of turmeric
  • 3 to 4 drops of thieves essential oil
  • 1 glass jar with lid

What to do:

  •  Mix all ingredients and pour in the glass jar.
  •  grab a dab of turmeric toothpaste with your toothbrush and brush your teeth as usual.

NB: this yellow coloured toothpaste naturally whitens your teeth (yes, just like the black activated charcoal does) but also stains your toothbrush and everything else, so do handle it carefully. It also treats gums and bad breath, and gets rid of bacteria thanks to the four thieves essential oil. Use it a few days and see results for yourself.  I personally love how clean my teeth feel after using this all natural DIY turmeric toothpaste.

In Conclusion:

Stop using that poisonous commercial toothpaste now. There are better and safer alternatives for your teeth, and of course don’t forget to oil pull to improve your dental hygiene a step further. And let’s not forget the added benefits of making your own toothpaste: save money (yes, making your own will save you money instead of buying it) and no more plastic tubes to recycle (one little step to help plastic pollution)!
