It’s wintertime again, and everywhere you turn, people seem to be coming down with colds, the flu, and other viruses. While strengthening your immune system is important, another effective way to protect yourself from airborne illnesses—often caught simply by breathing through your nose—is the use of iodine. You’re likely already familiar with povidone-iodine as a trusted disinfectant for minor wounds, burns, and skin infections, thanks to its ability to rapidly kill bacteria and other microorganisms. Today, I will teach you how to make a povidone-iodine nasal spray designed to help cleanse the nasal passages and reduce exposure to harmful viruses.

What you’ll need:
- A bottle of Povidine-iodine
- Distilled or boiled water
- a glass container or nasal spray
What to do:
- Begin by boiling your glass container to thouroughly clean it and disinfect it
- The ratio of Povidine-iodine is 10% to 90% water so for a 100ml you would need two teaspoons of Povidine-iodine and 90ml (or 18 teaspoons) of water.
- Make sure you use distilled water or boiled water which you will let cool down before mixing to the iodione.
- Close the container and shake well before each use.
- if you used a spray bottle, spray once or twice in each nostril. If you used a simple glass container, take a Q tip, let the tip soak in the iodine mixture and rub it inside each of your nostrils. You will need to sneeze and clean your nose right after in both cases.
- Make sure to use the iodine mixture several times per day and every time you were surrounded by people (office, public transportation, shops, gym, airplane, etc.)
In conclusion:
Because of iodine’s powerful antibacterial properties, the regular use of this nose spray offers an added layer of protection against the viruses and illnesses present in your surroundings. By helping to reduce harmful pathogens before they can enter the body, this simple daily habit supports overall health and strengthens your defense against common sicknesses. Incorporating this nose spray into your routine can be an effective and proactive step toward staying healthy and well during the winter months.
